Salman takes Miss Universe for a ride on bike!

Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera rode pillion on Salman Khan’s bike a few days back.

Zuleyka is on an AIDS awareness tour of India. She is spearheading a campaign with the motto ‘Get Tested, It's in Fashion’.

Media reports say the Puerto Rican beauty was a special guest at Salman Khan ’s Eid party last week. After the party, the Bollywood star offered to drop her home on his motorbike.

The time was around 3 in the morning. Salman drove Zuleyka from his Bandra residence to Royal Palms in Goregaon, where she was staying.

A newspaper even quotes Zuleyka as saying that she finds Salman “hot”. She thinks Salman has “an amazing body and a great sense of humour.”

Zuleyka aspires to become an actress someday. Her favourite is Angelina Jolie, who by coincidence is also shooting in India nowadays.

Zuleyka was crowned Miss Universe 2006 in July this year.

Jaan-e-mann - Movie review

Let's clear a myth before we get into the analyzing mode…

JAAN-E-MANN is about two guys loving the same girl. Her first relationship doesn't work for certain reasons. Opportunity comes knocking again. The second guy rides into her heart. Sounds familiar?

From SANGAM to KABHI KABHIE to CHANDNI to SAAJAN, the concept of two men falling head over heals in love with the same woman has been done to death in Bollywood. Is there anything else left to explore? What novelty does JAAN-E-MANN offer then? Is it old wine packaged in a new bottle?

Sure, JAAN-E-MANN is a love story. But it explores new grounds, in terms of story as well as execution. It's an unconventional film. Yet, innovative at the same time. It doesn't follow the path most love stories charter. It's a fresh concept and the twists and turns in the screenplay only ensure that it doesn't stagnate.

To be brutally honest, it takes time to absorb a new format of storytelling. As moviegoers, we are used to following one particular format, which rarely changes. In JAAN-E-MANN, the story begins where most end. At the very outset, you're told that the first relationship has already fallen apart. Knowing that it's over between the two, the first guy encourages [and actually assists/trains/spoon-feeds] the second guy to get close to the woman both love. The second guy faithfully follows the instructions, till a twist in the tale brings about an awakening. Just when you think that it's going to be a conventional climax, there's a twist again…

Nope, JAAN-E-MANN isn't purani bottle par naya label. Definitely not!

It's said that [most] editors make fantastic directors. After all, the biggest of dreams take final shape on the editing table. Editor Shirish Kunder wears many hats in his first attempt: Director, story-screenplay-dialogues' writer, background music composer, TV and theatrical promo maker and of course, editor. And yes, he makes a terrific impact in his maiden attempt as a storyteller.

The marriage of realism with escapism as also form and content is evident in JAAN-E-MANN. There are moments that offer tremendous entertainment. There are times when Shirish borrows incidents straight from life; you've seen it happening to someone or perhaps, it's happened to you.

All the same, the execution of the film and the shot compositions are masterly. If you understand cinema or if you're an avid moviegoer, you'd notice that JAAN-E-MANN is shades apart from Yash Chopra or Mani Ratnam or Priyadarshan or RGV or Rakesh Roshan's movies. It stands out for its individuality. The technique leaves you wondering, is this Hindi cinema or are you watching a fairytale?

Most importantly, JAAN-E-MANN has its heart in the right place. Like this reviewer pointed out at the outset, it takes time to get used to Shirish's style of narrating a story. The initial reels may give you the feeling that it's all gloss, no soul and perhaps, the director has lost his marbles and experimented at the expense of an uncompromising producer [Sajid Nadiadwala], but JAAN-E-MANN catches you slowly, but firmly and doesn't leave you till the end.

Wait, this doesn't imply that JAAN-E-MANN is a flawless product. There are blemishes that stand out in the narrative. If Shirish deserves distinction marks as a storyteller, you need to deduct his points as an editor. Perhaps, Shirish fell in love with his product and didn't realize that this 19 reeler tends to get lengthy and at times, slow paced.

Also, Shirish's style of storytelling -- very novel and refreshingly different -- caters more to the multiplex crowd/elite/big city junta/Overseas audience rather than the aam public/hoi polloi/masses/frontbenchers. The generous usage of English will also restrict its appeal to urban centres. Yes, there are mass appealing moments, but JAAN-E-MANN is a big gamble. The first section of moviegoers would love the film and if it catches on with the masses [thanks to the strong emotional quotient in the second hour], there's no stopping the film then.

Now to the story:
JAAN-E-MANN begins with Suhan [Salman Khan] receiving a notice to pay the alimony. He has to shell out Rs. 50 lacs to his estranged wife Piya [Preity Zinta], now settled in the U.S. Suhan's 'Chachu' Boney [Anupam Kher], a lawyer, thinks of ways to wriggle out of the situation.

It's at this juncture that Champu aka Agastya [Akshay Kumar] walks in, looking for Piya. He was in love with her during the college days, he tells Suhan and Chachu, but she was in love with someone else [Agastya is unaware that Suhan is the guy]. Piya had ignored Agastya then, a nerd, and even broke his heart by courting another guy. A heartbroken Agastya had left the college for this reason.

Back to the present: Agastya is now at NASA. His outwardly appearance may've undergone a change, but he still doesn't know how to communicate with a girl, forget dating her. Suhan and Chachu hatch the plan to get Agastya and Piya together, so that Suhan is out of the mess.

Agastya flies to New York, so does Suhan. They hire an apartment right opposite Piya's residence and monitor each and every move of her through binoculars and telescope. Suhan helps Agastya to woo Piya. A reluctant Piya eventually gives in. But the story changes when Suhan gets to know of a certain reality and that changes his life completely. He feels responsible towards Piya.

Suhan realizes his folly and wants to make amends. But oblivious to Suhan's presence, Piya is now preparing for a life with Agastya. One wouldn't like to reveal the climax, since that would take the sheen away from the enterprise. We wouldn't be able to reveal the finale either, which is sure to bring a smile on your face.

JAAN-E-MANN balances humor and emotions beautifully. In fact, a film on relationships ought to rest on a solid emotional ground and JAAN-E-MANN has those scenes in abundance, especially in the second hour. Salman's journey from a mere spectator of Akshay-Preity's courtship to being a part of the love story is beautifully depicted. What prompts Salman to have a change of heart and feel more responsible [the reason is withheld by the reviewer] is again a brilliant stroke from the writing, execution and performance point of view.

All the same, the humor is just perfect. It's not the crass or mindless kind, but simple and at the same time, sure to bring a smile on your face or force you to break into laughter.

JAAN-E-MANN has more aces, starting with Farah Khan's choreography. Every song in immaculately choreographed and comes across as a remarkable piece of art. Anu Malik's music is soothing and soft, in sync with the mood of the film. 'Jaane Ke Jaane Na' is undoubtedly the best track of the enterprise. 'Ajnabee Shaher' and 'Humko Maloom Hai' are two compositions that also stand out for sheer melody. Sudeep Chatterjee's cinematography is remarkable. Right from Sabu Cyril's delightfully colorful sets to the skyline of New York, the D.O.P. captures every moment with dexterity and flourish on celluloid. Surily Goel's costumes are classy and well-synchronized with the upmarket feel.

Now to the performances! The one question that you want to ask Salman is, why had you hidden the sensitive performer in you all these years? Agreed, the actor has delivered fine performances in the past, right from Sooraj Barjatya's films to TERE NAAM to NO ENTRY [aimed at the masses]. But this is an altogether different Salman you see in JAAN-E-MANN. In fact, it wouldn't be erroneous to state that if asked to choose one performance from the three pivotal ones in JAAN-E-MANN, it has to be Salman without doubt. He wins hands down completely. The role is a reflection of what Salman can handle in real life: Loads of attitude, the mischievous dude with a naughty streak and most importantly, a sensitive and soft-hearted man who can weep, if affected. Simply remarkable!

Akshay is first-rate. The actor plays a simpleton, a far cry from the roles he's now famous for [DEEWANE HUYE PAAGAL, GARAM MASALA, PHIR HERA PHERI] and proves his versatility yet again. There's a marked growth in Akshay's performances and the one in JAAN-E-MANN only endorses the statement.

Preity is wonderful. Not only does she look like a woman who is the cynosure of two men, but also emotes her part with amazing grace. There's a surprise in store in the end and Preity's fans are sure to love her in that look as well.

Anupam Kher is fantastic as Chachu, but has an ill-defined role as the look-alike in New York. Jawed Sheikh and Soni Razdan [Preity's parents] are appropriate in brief roles. Nawaab [Preity's brother] and Aman Verma are decent.

On the whole, JAAN-E-MANN balances humor and emotions beautifully. In fact, it's a BIG film in all respects -- right from its cast to the extravagant sets to the lavish making, besides, of course, unadulterated entertainment it has to offer. At the box-office, the Diwali and Idd holidays will prove bountiful for the film and add to the big returns. Business-wise, JAAN-E-MANN should fare best at multiplexes and also at major centres, besides Overseas. But its business at comparatively smaller centres, where masala films dominate, is bound to be affected by DON's presence. However, if the strong word of mouth catches on, the business at smaller centres will add to its booty.

Salaam-E-Ishq : Movie Preview

Six stories running parallel are bound together by one common theme: love. Nikhil Advani’s movie ‘Salaam-e-Ishq’ is, as its title suggests, a tribute to love.

The movie features a host of Bollywood stars: Salman Khan , Priyanka Chopra , John Abraham , Vidya Balan , Anil Kapoor , Juhi Chawla , Akshaye Khanna , Ayesha Takia , Govinda and Shannon Esrechowitz .

Check out the movie’s slideshow at Salaam-e-Ishq .

Priyanka Chopra plays Kkamini. Despite the addition of an extra ‘k’ into her name, lady luck has not smiled on this item girl in Bollywood. Although Kkamini is being sought after for items, she has not made it into the league of top actresses. Added to this, she wakes up in the morning to another controversy in the newspapers.

Kkamini decides to change her fate. She makes a plan to change her image in movies, in media and in the eyes of the big producers of Bollywood. If executed rightly the plan will put her into the big league.

But there is one thing she fails to anticipate. That is Rahul (Salman Khan).

Tehzeeb (Vidya Balan) and Ashutosh (John Abraham) make an ideal husband-wife. She wakes in the morning to the glint of a diamond pendant, a gift from her loving husband on their marriage anniversary. Two years ago they had eloped to Mumbai and got married. Today they are completely obsessed about each other.

Tehzeeb and Ashutosh work with a news channel. She is a field reporter and he is a film editor. They have had their share of struggles to make ends meet.

Ashutosh’s world shatters after Tehzeeb is involved in an accident. The course of his life is changed and his love for Tehzeeb is put to test.

In a sprawling house in London, Vinay Malhotra (Anil Kapoor) lives with his caring wife Seema (Juhi Chawla) and lovely daughters. He has everything a man can ask for: a picture perfect family, a secure job (as a PR executive) and financial security.

But things change when in Vinay’s picture perfect world comes a woman named Anjali (Anjana Sukhani). Anjali is confident and ambitious girl who knows how to get what she wants. And she wants Vinay.

Shiven (Akshaye Khanna) is the most eligible bachelor in Delhi. He is engaged to Gia (Ayesha Takia) and the two are set to marry in the next 10 days.

But the thought of marrying scares Shiven. So he breaks off his engagement with Gia.

Doing thus, Shiven regains his freedom, but Gia is emotionally hurt. However, with each passing day, Shiven realizes how lonely and incomplete he is without Gia.

Govinda plays a taxi-driver Raju Taxiwala. Every morning he drives from his Chandni Chowk home to the airport, stands in the long queue and watches the door of the airport with the hope that his dream girl Stephanie (Shannon Esrechowitz) will return some day.

Then that fateful day comes and Stephanie walks out of the door. But she has come back not for Raju but to look for her boyfriend Rohit Chaddha.

Alongside these five stories there also runs the tale of a Parsi middle-class man Rustom Dastoor (Sohail Khan) who wants to spend as much time as possible making love to his wife Dolly. But his attempts to do so throw the couple into situations that are sometimes comic and sometimes tragic.

The story of ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’ has been written by Nikhil Advani himself. The costume designing is done by Vikram Phadnis and Alvira Agnihotri (Salman’s sister).

The film is slated to release early next year.

`Dhoom` director`s next?

A few months ago, we broke the news of DHOOM and DHOOM 2 director Sanjay Gadhvi starting a film for Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd. [GOLMAAL, BHAGAM BHAAG, MR. FRAUD]. Well, the latest buzz in film circles is that Gadhvi has roped in Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan for the film, which is budgeted at Rs. 75 crores.

“Not true at all,” Denis Selarka of Ashtavinayak denies the development. So what’s the truth? “The truth is that we’ve approached Akshay for this film and we’re still in talks with him currently. But nothing is finalized yet. As for Salman, we did meet him but for two different projects, to be directed by Priyadarshan and Rumi Jaffrey, respectively. As far as Ajay is concerned, we’ve confirmed him for GOLMAAL 2,” Denis clarifies.

Denis also denies that the film is budgeted at Rs. 75 crores. “The budget hasn’t crossed our minds yet. We are still working on the project and a clearer picture vis-à-vis the star cast and budget would emerge later this year,” he elucidates.

“I Would Love to Play Circuit,” says Salman

“I would love to play Circuit,” said Salman Khan on NDTV’s ‘Walk The Talk’ yesterday. The ‘Jaaneman’ rockstar had loved ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ and is “Dying to see Lage Raho Munnabhai.” Would he have liked to play Munna’s character? “No, only Sanju could have done full justice to it,” he said.

Salman Khan is a relaxed man in many ways. I still remember I had watched him in ‘Walk The Talk’ around one and a half years back after the Vivek Oberoi press conference episode. It was clear Salman had only consented for the interview as his father script writer Salim Khan had asked him to do so. He had looked zapped, lost and incomprehensible. But yesterday, he was jovial, gave respect to all the questions, handled a few tricky questions smartly and was generous in his praise of all the people he cares for.

When asked about Shahrukh and Aamir, he stated that his respect for SRK stems from the fact that he is the only one who is earning bread in his family as his parents are no more. As for Aamir, then according to Salman, he has not seen a man with such amazing will power. Any examples? “He had put on some weight but when he decided that it’s time to control he went on a diet and exercise routine. And today he is looking the same as QSQT days. He came for dinner the other day and he had brought his diet food along with himself. That’s how particular he is about something that he believes in.” Amongst today’s brat-pack, he finds Hrithik Roshan the best as he is very good looking and works very hard.

You may find faults with many a thing Salman Khan has done in the past, but still one has to give it to him that he is a very secure actor. And that’s a huge asking for in the world of make believe where insecurity rules-the-roast all the time.

Salman and his holes

Check out Salman Khan’s new fashion statement. Here we see his blazer in an all new and very much different piece of art.

Believing in the phrase old is gold, Salman is definitely trying the worn out look. Did you notice the seam on his blazer? How can you? They aren’t there! Salman is definitely a trend setter be it his constant topless scenes or his bald look in Tere Naam. Salman’s favourite designer Vikram Phadnis must have probably designed the holes in his sheathing which nicely shows bits and pieces of his inner shirt.

Next to him is none other than our very own and favourite Govinda who again is known for the most mismatched combination costumes onscreen and the actor is comfortable in something less torn.

JAAN-E-MANN and the SAIFF clarification

It was reported lately in the Media that JAAN-E-MANN was not ready to be screened for the closing ceremony at the prestigious South Asian film festival. The producers would like to clarify, that its true that earlier there was talks of the film to be showcased at the prestigious festival on Oct 8th. But then it was mutually decided not to go ahead because it would be too early keeping in mind the Indian release date is Oct 20th.

JAAN-E-MANN has been arousing stupendous curiosity and is the most awaited blockbuster this festival season. And therefore it's rightly justified to ensure that everyone sees the film on the release date. Infact the innovative producer has gone a step ahead and tied up with UFO Moviez to distribute the film digitally to 500 cinemas, Thus ensuring that even the B and C centres get to see the movie on the worldwide release date. "Yeah its true that earlier we had talks to screen the film at the prestigious SAIFF, but than we mutually decided not to go ahead since it would be a bit early and would only be fair if everyone gets to see the film on the worldwide release date," informed Sajid Nadiadwala.

Box-office ka Khan kaun?

While industrywallahs await the Khan duel at the box-office with Shah Rukh Khan's 'Don' and Salman Khan's 'Jaan-E-Mann' releasing this festive season, viewers reveal which Khan they are more keen to see.

YOU SAY...
I'd like to see Salman Khan's 'Jaan-E-Mann'. I feel he has more sex appeal and brings intensity to any role he plays. However, 'Don' could prove to be a greater commercial bet!
Farida Salim, businessperson

I am keen to see SRK's 'Don'. His character seems different and his hairstyle is interesting. In addition, the aggressiveness and playboy quality may be new to watch.
Raj Usman Gani, real-estate agent

I guess 'Don' will be a better flick, it being a Farhan Akhtar directorial. Besides, it is a remake of a hit film. Above all, it's a SRK film. But I am fond of Salman too and 'Jaan-E-Mann' has great music. So I'll watch both.
Bashira Khatri, nutritionist

Undoubtedly, Shah Rukh Khan's 'Don'! Salman has been doing the same kind of roles for a while now. I am sure SRK will do justice to this new role.
Vinita Sagwekar, manager

Shah Rukh Khan and 'Don' is a deadly combination. So it is obviously 'Don' that I am looking forward to.
Dayanand Shetty, restaurateur

"I will definitely go for 'Don'. Firstly, it has SRK, and secondly because I love the way Farhan Akhtar treats his movies. I think 'Don' will rock. 'Jaan-E-Mann' promos look unappealing and since I am not a Salman fan, I may not go for it."
Arpana Singh, BMM student

Jaan-e-Mann will be enjoyed by a 4 year to a 104 year old - Preity Zinta

‘Jaan-E-Mann’ has been in the news right from day it started. The buzz just got bigger with coming together of two charismatic superstars - Salman & Akshay - who shared an extremely robust chemistry in the blockbuster 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi'. Bollywood diva Preity Zinta just made the film much bigger.

Additionally it is being produced by Sajid Nadiadwala who has had a consistent strings of blockbusters starting with 'Waqt Hamara Hain', 'Jeet' , 'Judwaa', 'Har Dil Jo Pyaar Kareega' and 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi'.

At the Box–Office, the film already seems to be a winner, even before its release. How bullish is the film trade about 'Jaan-e-Mann' can be gauged from the fact it has broken all records for the distribution rights of the various territories.

That the film has got record breaking offers right under the nose of over-rated films that were tom-tommed at the beginning of the year speaks volumes on the confidence of the trade in the film.

'Jaan-e-Mann' is a 35 crore film and Sajid Nadiadwala invested the amount only in a 2 minute narration by Farah Khan at a party because he was so impressed & kicked by the idea.

The much awaited musical block-buster 'Jaan-E-Mann' is a romantic musical love story based in New York and has been showcased like a Broadway musical with the story told in an unusual manner by the very talented debutant director Shirish Kundar.

Says Sajid Nadiadwala, "People will be pleasantly surprised when they see Shirish's film. It is a visual delight, the emotions are right. It has a very unique method of story telling and it is a romantic musical which the audience prefers in the festival season."

'Jaan-E-Mann' has become such a hot proposition that Sajid Nadiadwala has got the best theaters and record breaking theater chain. In fact it's a record of sorts that the distributors have got 250 plus screen in the Mumbai territory alone.

It also proves the confidence level in the distribution fraternity regarding the quality entertainers from the Nadiadwala Grandsons banner. Even the eye grabbing trailer of 'Jaan-e-Mann' created quite an impact in the minds of the audience. The slick and innovative promo cost the producer a cool 40 lakh. Says Sajid "I didn't mind spending 40 lakh on the promo of 'Jaan-e-Mann', because Big things need Big money. A quality product has to be marketed well. That is my commitment and belief in the film!"

The music of 'Jaan-e-Mann' is already scorching the musical charts and has brought back melody in the fore, a welcome relief from the cacophony dished out lately. Anu Malik has given a musical score that flows into the narration of the script and are 'story songs' that takes the film forward. It's sure to be a benchmark in his career. Farah Khan, considered as the Sachin Tendulkar of choreography, has given her best and promises that the film would be a visual delight.

Shirish considers that Salman has given his best performance of his career. Also as per him Akshay Kumar has shown unimaginable depth in a difficult role while Preity is natural as ever.

The excitement factor of 'Jaan-e-Mann' is its innovative story telling technique and visual treatment backed by a very dependable banner known for churning out block-busters. Additionally superstars - Salman, Akshay and Preity - are riding high in the box office meter and the popularity that cuts across the multiplex audience, B & C centers and the Overseas market.

As Priety Zinta rightly puts it across "'Jaan-e-Mann' is a universal Entertainer. It will be enjoyed by a 4 year old to a 104 year old"

Perhaps with all the right ingredients, 'Jaan-e-Mann' might just become this Diwali/Idd record box office smash!

SRK or Salman?

The Big Friday 20th October is approaching fast and furious. And the plans have already started filling in. so, what’s your pick this festive season! SRK’s stylish ‘Don’ or Salman-Akshay’s paint-my-love ‘Jaaneman’… Both the pictures are looking extremely positive and Big Bollywood money is riding on them.

Ritesh Dishwani and Sajid Nadiadwala, the respective producers of ‘Don’ and ‘Jaaneman’ are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring a huge opening for their films.

They are determined to milk the Diwali Holidays from October 20th followed by Eid on 25th. It’s a well known fact that a sizable Muslim population stops watching films in the Ramzan and that’s one of the reasons why no big releases take place during the Ramzan month. With Diwali and Eid coming back to back, both ‘Don’ as well as ‘Jaaneman’ would surely try-n-cash-in on the long holiday period.

Bollywood is upbeat about the two releases and is hoping for an encore at the Box Office. This year has been phenomenal for the Hindi Film Industry and ‘Don’ and ‘Jaaneman’ may well carry that trend and create real history in the world of illusions. The commercial fate of these two movies will also decide who’s the bigger Khan…SRK or Sallu…Or will Akshay steal the thunder?

`Jaan-E-Mann` - Akshay's straight 3rd Diwali / Idd release

Akshay seems to becoming a Diwali /Idd release specialist. He has always had a block-buster during the festival period. 2 years back he took on SRK's 'Veer Zaara' with 'Aitraaz' and followed it up last year with 'Garam Masala' as a face/off with Salman's 'Kyon Ki'.

This year again it's a repeat clash with SRK'S 'Don' v/s 'Jaan-e-maan', which combines the box office & charismatic force of two superstars. Sajid Nadiadwala is confident of Jaan-e-maan and his superstars. In fact the trade pundits have already declared it a winner, what with the record breaking distribution deals and the high decibel buzz on the film.

Also Akshay is on a consecutive box office run since 'Aitraaz'. So will the Diwali/Idd release specialist create the fire works at the Box Office this year too? Surely seems so, with all the indicators moving in that direction!!

Priety Zinta trips for `Jaanemann`

Whilst others may go in for Numerology to ensure the success of their films, for Preity it’s tad to simple & effective too. She jokes that whenever she has fallen down whilst shooting for a film; the film invariability turns out to be a Hit.

She was referring to the time when she fell during the shoot in central park for Jaan-e-maan. It took her 5 minutes to realize that choreographer Farah Khan had tripped her. Farah playfully teased her “Priety has fallen; the film will be a hit. Everyone joined in the chorus “The film is going to be a hit.”

If only superstition could define success….Weird are the ways of Bollywood.

What Salman does between shoots

What do you do when you have some time between shoots? If you are an actor, you moonlight as a model.

It's pretty much the season for stars at a loose end. So, we have actress Isha Koppikar going back to her modelling days at a jewellery show while actor Salman Khan gets into supermodel gear without missing a step.

Film stars are a big draw at fashion shows. But do film stars and the ramp make a good fit?

Actor, Isha Koppikar: It's very difficult. I still have stage fright, though I have done modelling before. I literally pray before stepping out on the ramp.

Producer and actor, Sohail Khan: Sadly enough when they called, they asked me to organise it, not model. I hope the next time, they ask me to model, and not organise it.

Actor, Sanjay Kapoor: We have heard of models not being good actors, but never heard of actors not being good models.

The catwalk may be a pleasant diversion from the usual action sequences, but at the end of the day, for Salman Khan, it's back to playing the role of the Bollwyood star that he's always been.

Jaan-e-Mann at New York film festival

To understand the wide range of films to be shown at the third edition of the ongoing South Asian International Film Festival in New York, you have to see just two or three of them.

Jaan-E-Mann, the romantic musical starring Preity Zinta, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar ends the festival on October 8. The budget of that one film, shot mostly in New York, could cover the entire budget of at least 10 other feature films being shown at SAIFF's newest festival.

SAIFF, which opened on October 4, was supposed to premiere the miniscule budget Anwar, the second film by Manish Jha (Matruboomi: A Nation Without Women). Twenty one films including Jaan-E-Mann will have their world premieres and 11 North American premieres. The films are in more than a dozen languages, including Tamil, Bengali and English. A substantial number of films, especially documentaries and short films, are made by people who are in their late 20s.

But due to some technical difficulties, Anwar could not feature at the festival. Instead, it was replaced by the critically-acclaimed Omkara, directed by Vishal Bharadwaj.

Salman, Kareena mobbed

Bollywood stars Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor got mobbed by media persons on Friday when they arrived in the Capital to inaugurate Mumbai-based designer Purva Kothari's first jewellery exhibition.

Kothari's designs are sold under the brand name Intrea.

Apart from media persons, star-struck guests went berserk when Salman and Kareena entered the Roshanara Hall of Taj Palace. The race among lensmen to capture the actors resulted in shifting the spotlight from Kothari and her designs to the stars.

Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel got ignored too. He was seen chatting with a friend in a corner.

Salman, who was at his charming best, refused to talk about his upcoming film Jaan-e-Mann. "I will not talk about my film. Ask me about fashion and jewellery," he chuckled.

He then talked about his style statement. "I always wear an earring and this bracelet," he said pointing towards his bracelet.

Salman also showed his pierced bellybutton. "My sister got it done so I also went ahead."

Kareena, looking gorgeous in jeans and a shirt, whetted the media's appetite. From fashion to films - she answered all their queries.

She said, "I am very fond of jewellery and that's why I am here. I have a couple of friends in Delhi, mainly designers," said Kareena who was wearing one of Kothari's creations.

Asked about Rang de Basanti being nominated as India's official entry for the Oscars, she said, "I loved Rang de Basanti. It is one of my favourite films. I am very happy that it is going to the Oscars. I will keep my fingers crossed".

With these two stars hogging the limelight, hardly anybody showed interest in the exquisitely designed jewellery on display.

Intrea is a joint venture between Kothari and diamond merchant Ketan Seth.

Salman Khan dresses up like a girl!

Bollywood’s macho man Salman Khan will be seen in girl’s attire in Sajid Nadiadwala’s soon-to-be-released flick Jaaneman .

As per reports, when the director Shirish Kunder asked Salman to dress up like a lady, the actor refused initially but eventually gave the shot according to the need of the director.

The film is a musical comic love story which also stars Preity Zinta and Akshay Kumar with Salman. Aki and Salman’s jodi has already given a fabulous performance in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi where they were paired opposite Priyanka Chopra. And now the handsome jodi will be seen impressing the bubbly Preity.

Except one shot as a girl, Salman will be seen playing a stud, while Akshay will be seen in a rather geekier avatar.

The producer of the film, Sajid Nadiadwala, shelled out Rs 4 million to shoot a promo for the film. The promo, shot in Chennai, features top-notch special effects.

‘Jaaneman’ is slated to release on October 20.

Will Salman say ‘Yes’?

That ace costume designer Vikram Phadnis is planning to turn director is known to all and sundry. Although Vikram revealed his desire to direct a film quite some time back, he hasn’t started his film yet. “That’s because I’ve yet to finalize the star cast of my movie,” Vikram clarifies.

That shouldn’t be tough, since Vikram has been designing outfits for Salman Khan and having an access to the actor wouldn’t be tough. “I don’t think Salman will be a part of my film. That’s because he has commitments to fulfill. He has to clear the backlog and then move over to fresh assignments. I wish I could wait, but I can’t,” Vikram admits.

Meanwhile, Vikram is ready with the script of the film, which is being backed by a leading music company. Watch this space for more details on Vikram’s multi-hero set-up.

Salman refuses a cameo in Milenge Milenge

It’s a known fact that when Salman is your friend, he will go out of the way to help him out. But if Salman has a problem with someone, the person can be really taken for a ride. Salman Khan and Shahid Kapoor are not best of friends. And now Salman has given hints of his animosity.

Salman Khan has opted out of the Shahid-Kareena starrer Milenge Milenge. Salman Khan was initially supposed to do an extended special appearance for Satish Kaushik directed Milenge Milenge, produced by Boney Kapoor. Salman was doing this film as he developed a good rapport with Satish Kaushik during Tere Naam and with Boney Kapoor during No Entry.

Well the story goes that during the controversial Rockstars concert, Shahid and Kareena spent all their free time together while all the others were spending time together as a team. This thing did not go too well with Salman and hurt his ego. He felt that they were ignoring him. Salman being an emotional person did not want to associate himself with them anymore and hence withdrew from the movie.

Boney Kapoor has confirmed the news and has said that he respects Salman too much to ask him questions over backing out from the film. Salman was to play a pivotal role in this long delayed film. Well we hope Boney finds a suitable replacement for Salman so that Milenge Milenge can finally see the light of the day.

Indian media defaming me: Salman Khan

Bollywood actor Salman Khan has said the Indian media was defaming him by regularly portraying a negative off-screen image.

'There's a business section that wants to portray everything negatively so that they can sell magazines or get good top ratings on TV,' Salman was quoted as saying in the BBC Asian Network's Gagan Grewal show Friday.

The 41-year-old actor has been charged with killing two protected antelope species in 1998. Again in April he was given a five-year jail term - currently under appeal - for a separate hunting incident. He is currently on bail while his appeal is being heard.

Salman has denied these wrongdoings, saying his conviction was wrong and the judge sentenced him only because he wanted to make an example out of him.

'Apparently the judge said that openly,' Khan told the anchor.

'They wanted to set an example out of me... Who knew the black buck? I mean today because of me, people know there's an endangered species of deer called black buck, well it's actually an antelope.'

He is also facing trial in a hit-and-run case in Mumbai. One person was killed and three were injured when Salman allegedly drove into a group of pavement dwellers in 2002.

Jaan-e-mann Maximum Screen Prints in Mumbai Ever

Sajid Nadiadwala’s belief in the adage ‘No guts no glory’ seems to be paying off quite well. And how !! He had invested Rs 40 crore with a big starcast on a new talented director, Shirish Kunder which is never done by even the biggest of banners. And the talented director has delivered a film which has become the hottest proposition. After breaking the record for the Mumbai territory for Rs 7.4crore and other territories too, ‘Jaan-e-mann’ has now broken the record for the maximum number of screen in the Mumbai circuit (Includes City suburbs, Thane, Maharashtra, Gujarat ).

‘Jaan-e-mann’ starring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta will be released in 250+ screens in the Mumbai territory much more than ‘Krrish’ and ‘KANK’ (200 + screens). In the bargain Sajid Nadiadwala has ensured that the best theatres and screen is available for his patrons. Says Denis Selarka of Shree Astavinayak Cinevision ltd, the Mumbai distributor for the film, “JAAN-E-MANN is definitely a hot proposition and it’s true that we are planning to release the movie in as many as 250+ screen in the Mumbai territory.”

The Trade which is true barometer about which film is hot is abuzz on how the various major distributors who had brought the film for a record breaking fee are not yet selling it to the sub distributors as is normally done. And after the release of the Rs 40 lakh trailer and the first look of the film unleashed by Sajid Nadiadwala, has further fuelled the buzz about JAAN-E-MANN being the biggest release for the festive season.

Says Sajid, “Touchwood the film is so hot in the trade. I’m confident that our brand Nadiadwala Grandsons which stands for complete Entertainers will fulfill everyone's expectations with the release of ‘JAAN-E-MANN’. I’m sure everyone will benefit from JAAN-E-MANN.”

With the unbeatable block-buster track record , the deadly star-cast combo, the script, and the trailer and the look of the film makes it the hottest film this Diwali/ IDD.

Salmans first on-screen kiss?

Rumors are rife that Salman Khan shares his first on-screen lip-lock with Preity Zinta in the forthcoming movie Jaanemann, directed by Shirish Kunder. When contacted, the producer of the movie, Sajid Nadiadwala denied the news saying, “There is no truth to the rumor as there is no kiss in the movie”. Well if the news was true, Salman’s fans would be in for big surprise as this would be a little different from Salman’s onscreen image.

Jaanemann is slated for a Diwali release worldwide and also stars Akshay Kumar in the lead.

“I Don’t Mind Doing A Film With Ash,” Says Salman Khan

“I don’t mind doing a film with Aishwarya,” said Salman Khan in a television interview yesterday. When prodded further as to whose mistake it was in his relationship with the Miss World, the temperamental star stated that he doesn’t believe in badmouthing anyone so he is ready to take all the blame. He also said that he shares a warm and cordial relationship with all his ex-girlfriends. To which the aggressive journo sniggered, “Except one….”

Somehow after watching the half an hour long interview one gathered an impression that one of the biggest stars ever of Bollywood is naïve at heart. And very simple. A reclusive star is made to sit on the Hot Seat to boost the TRPs of a show hosted by not an entertainment specialist, but a political journalist. All the uncomfortable personal questions (Especially related with Aishwarya Rai) that have been done-to-death are thrown at him and little time space is given to Salman the star and the actor. Khan politely answered all the questions and kept smiling even when he looked uneasy due to the cheesy questions like “How many girlfriends have you had so far?”

When asked why the two King Khans that complete the trio of superstars (Aamir and Shahrukh) never supported him when he was in messy situations, Salman replied, “Everyone has their own problems. It’s not as if they don’t call. They do call me. But I myself tell them that don’t come out in support of me for you might land in trouble yourself. When I am out of this mess I myself shall come and meet you.” And what about the image that one is a king, the other a badshah, what are you? “I am the joker of the pack.” But a joker is very crucial in a pack of cards. “That’s a different way of looking at things,” Salman Khan smiled.

The good part about this Salman Khan that I witnesses yesterday was that he seems much more relaxed than before. He was polite, humble and courteous. But maybe he should draw a line when it comes to discussing his personal life in the open. For example when asked about Katrina Kaif, his current girlfriend who was the first to join him in Jodhpur when he was jailed for five days few months ago, he replied that he doesn’t wish to speak about her. “Whenever I’ve spoken about people it has become jinxed.”

Will Salman match SRK-Aamir

Bollywood's other two Khans – Aamir and Shahrukh have already notched up notable success this year. Shahrukh’s KANK is a declared superhit within two weeks of its release, with some reports suggesting that it has already grossed Rs 70 crores. Aamir’s Rang De Basanti, and Fanaa were both big hits.

Hrithik Roshan with Krrish and Abhishek Bachchan with KANK and Bunty Aur Babli are two other stars who have got big nods from the audiences this year.

Salman Khan, so far this year, has been in the limelight for the wrong reason - his legal transgressions. In February he was sentenced to one year in prison for hunting an endangered species, the Chinkara. Fortunately for him, following an appeal, the sentence was stayed by a higher court.

Later, on April 10, in a different case for a similar offence, he was handed a five year jail term. This time he actually spent 2 days in jail before being released on bail.

Salman has had one lack luster release so far in 2006 - Shaadi karke phas gaya yaar, a film that no one, including Salman, placed any bets on and which, not surprisingly, turned out to be a big flop.

However, Salman fans need not despair. They will get to see their favorite star soon and repeatedly. He is due to appear in three big ticket movies almost back to back later this year.

Releasing on 23 Oct 2006 will be Salam-e-Ishq: A tribute to love, produced by Mukesh Talreja (Tere Naam / Kyon Ki / Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha). The film packs a wallop as far as the star cast goes - Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Akshaye Khanna, Ayesha Takia, John Abraham, Vidya Balan, Govinda, Shannon Esrechowitz, Sohail Khan, Perizaad Zorabian and Anjana Sukhani

Next, releasing on 10 Nov 2006, is BR Films Babul featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee, John Abraham and Om Puri.

Finally, on 17 November 2006 will be the long awaited Janeman by Bollywood Hollywood Productions featuring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Preity Zinta and Anupam Kher. The film has an interesting history detailed in Jaaneman - Keeps us waiting.

Though Salman will have three good opportunities to do so it is unlikely he will emerge as the dominant star of 2006. He seems to have too many contenders. Hrithik Roshan, with the gravity defying super hit Krrish already tucked under his super hero cape and with Dhoom II set to explode during Diwali, seems to be front runner for that honor.

Closely trailing are Shahrukh, Aamir and Abhishek. There are other stars to contend with - Sunjay Dutt in Lage Raho Munna Bhai, could come good, very good! Similarly, King Khan Shahrukh could well settle the issue with yet another stellar performance in the anxiously awaited remake of Don.

Salman, who has other good films lined up for release early next year, is unlikely to be perturbed. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariyan opposite Rani Mukerjee, Sony Pictures India's first foray into local production, is one example. His other movies currently filming include God Tussi Great Ho, Partner and London Dreams

Salman Khan in Namastey London

Just some time back we told you about the possibility of the presence of Riteish Deshmukh in Vipul Shah’s Namastey London. Bobby Deol was also seen on the sets of the film while he was shooting for his film Jhoom Barabar Jhoom in London. The movie is in news again.

Vipul has been shooting for the film in London for a while now. Apparently, Salman Khan is also present in the city shooting for Nikhil Advani’s Salaam-e-Ishq. He therefore, bumped into Vipul a couple of times in London and well.

Khan has now even agreed to do a cameo in Namastey London. Sallu will now be seen doing a small appearance in the film. Salman’s approval however, doesn’t really come as a big surprise since his “good friend” Katrina Kaif also stars in the film.

Biography

Salman Khan
Often known as Bollywood's Bad boy, his knack of walking into trouble has overshadowed people's perception of him as an actor. He may have been featured as the bad guy of the industry several times over. But many-a-common-man claims that this macho hunk has a heart made of pure gold.

Born on December 27, 1968 Salman Khan is the son of the legendary writer Salim Khan, who penned many super-hits in the yesteryear's like Sholay, Deewar, and Don. Salman started his acting carrier in 1988 by doing a supporting role in the movie "Biwi Ho To Aisi". The following year he came up with his leading role in the box office romantic hit Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). From there he became the heart throb of Indian cinema.

Following with other box office hits he showed his terrific performance in Saajan (1991), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). His transformations can be sensitive, vulnerable, funny, aggressive and charming as his role demands.

In 1998 he was arrested by the local police from the shooting location of the film Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999), for killing protected wild animals and spent about a week behind the bars. The actor is facing trial in three cases of killing black bucks and chinkaras and another of illegal possession of arms. In September 2002, Salman Khan had hit the headlines after he crashed his Land Cruiser near the American Express bakery in Bandra, killing one man and injuring others.

Being in those roguish behaviors he tried to balance his troubled life with his carrier. In 2003 he gave his emotionally charged performance as playing an obsessed lover in "Tere Naam" that translated into good reviews and a good run at the box office. He has not only managed to revive his career, but also to restore the confidence of his producers and distributors alike.

His work was noticed internationally in the movie Phir Milenge (2004) where he played the role of an AIDS patient. It was well appreciated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for presenting the problems of AIDS patient in today's world.

After almost twenty years in the industry, he is still regarded as one of the top actors in Bollywood. Because of his attractive image a good number of female artists are attracted to him with whom he is said to have affairs. His relationships have spanned such wide generation gaps – from Sangeeta Bijlani to Katrina Kaif

Always believes in giving newcomers a chance. So he spares time in between shots to listen to their scrip ideas, and credits this to his memory of when he was a newcomer.

He always appears in films wearing a bracelet with a turquoise stone; his father wears a similar "lucky" bracelet.

He frequently appears in films sans shirt — he is a dedicated bodybuilder and rarely misses a chance to show off the results.

Qoutes

"The only person I have hurt is myself."

"In life go straight and turn right."

"For me acting, comes straight from the heart. In that sense I don't act at all. I think that to feel the character's pain I have to be myself. Somewhere audiences see that."

On his childhood problems and his father's second marriage to Helen: "It was very difficult in the beginning, when everybody was talking about it. My mother just couldn't take it. It hurt her terribly. She used to worry all the time, go in to depression frequently. When she cried, we children used to cry with her."
